Who Am I?

Have you ever been around someone who is so secure in their identity that the more you are with them the more they affirm who you are?

My Uncle Gene Horton was like that. Physically, he was one of the biggest men I have ever known with large hands, a big smile, and the curliest hair I had ever seen. He knew who he was and everyone who came near him knew that he loved them and saw possibility in them. He flourished as an elementary school principal. I think in his school, “Go to the principal’s office” had a different connotation. One look at this big man and you knew he had the hands and heart to pull destiny out you. Eloquent with words, he would make you a believer in yourself and your future. He made you look at yourself and everyone around you with fresh eyes–eyes focused on possibilty. My only regret is that he lived in Chattanooga, TN and I lived in Washington State. I simply did not get enough time with this incredible man.

I think my Uncle Gene was a bit like the Father of Glory. Both pull glory out of those who get near them. Both know their identity. When you know your identity, it is easy to pull identity out of another. There is no insecurity! God knows who He is. He identified himself as “I AM THAT I AM.” If you need to know more about Him go read the list of synonyms for the word good. Remember, scripture tells us “God is good!”

So what? Our culture is in an identity crisis. The biggest question in the hearts and minds of the current generation is “Who am I?” From Bruce Jenner to the kid in the church youth group down the street, this generation is desperate to identify their true identity.

For starters, they don’t know if they are male, female, heterosexual, bi-sexual, or a-sexual. All they know is their hearts are empty; there is no joy; there is no peace. Their life is a puzzle and they have no clue where to find the missing pieces.

May I submit to you that the Possibility Prayer is the most important prayer you will ever pray for your loved ones?

May I suggest that if you are a parent or grandparent you begin today to pray that your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up with a strong sense of personal identity?

We have so minimized the knowledge of God thinking it was of no practical purpose. We thought God was only good for being religious and going to church and not doing this or that and calling everything a sin. We have little working knowledge of his true identity.

I want to get intimate with the One who knows who He is so he can show me how to be a full expression of who I am. How about you?

Join me in this daily prayer:

Mind! Awaken to Possibility!

Heart! Arise in Expectancy!

Soul! Rest in Tranquility!

Strength! Be Anchored in Humility

until I come into the Full Expression of my Christ-formed Identity!

Who am I?
