Scanning Facebook yesterday, were you overcome by the heady fragrance of roses co-mingling with prime rib and chocolate mousse? Yes? Except for my friend, Krista, whose daughter threw up and sent hubby’s plans skidding. Krista, there is hope! It may be delayed, but keep the faith!
In fact, sound the trumpet! Terri Orbuch, Ph.D. of the University of Michigan has just released a 25-year study on marital bliss. Imagine a bell curve that looks like a goblet. From the wedding and into the third year, you are honeymooning on the rim of the goblet. Then get ready for a downhill plummet until year 25. I can hear all the newlyweds sighing, “Thanks a lot—not!” Hang on because at the quarter century point the bell curve starts an upward climb increasing marital satisfaction with each passing year. Savor the thought!
Activation for the Day after Valentine’s Day: Focus on the party at the quarter century point. Begin now to plan your big party or a cruise or bicycling in Europe as Clark and I did. From there on enjoy the ride! It may take the first 25 to start the good life, but now it’s only 10 more Valentine’s Days until you are dancing once again on the rim of the goblet!
That’s when Dr. Orbuch announces—“Second Honeymoon!”
No clue what happens after 35—I’m guessing these honeymooners are too busy experiencing the Flourishing Life to be part of any study.
Hey honey—our 35th is coming on July 17, 2011. Got plans? Woot! Woot!
