Do you love the colors of Christmas?
I do! I love the deeps greens and the brilliant reds melding over into deeper shades of burgundy.
When you plate up bold Christmas colors every day of the year for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you will be celebrating years and years of flourishing health!
Here’s your order of selection.
1. Select a Vibrant Array of Greens
2. Add Wild Pink Salmon from Alaska
3. Go for Bold, Deeply Colored Fruits
Think color! Select deeply-colored blueberries, midnight-purple blackberries, brilliant-red raspberries, strawberries with color all they way through, blood red oranges, succulent peaches, and juicy cherries.
Shop for color, the bolder the better! Take your color wheel to the market and go bold!
Snack Time at its Best!
As a child growing up in eastern Washington, I remember frozen cherries as the perfect snack and the one
I most loved. We picked tree-ripe Bings in neighboring orchards and froze them individually so they were the perfect treat before bed time!
Here’s how: Wash and spread on a cookie sheet to freeze individually, then pour them into a freezer bag. No sugar needed!
Today, frozen blueberries are much easier to acquire where we live–so that has become the perfect snack and a prime nutritional booster. I speed up the freezing process by spinning the washed berries in my salad spinner. They are dry enough to go straight into my freezer container without passing by the cookie sheet process. That is, if I can get them frozen before they are eaten fresh!
Berry Picking at its Best!
For our daughter, Annemarie, blueberries are her favorite treat–so I must have done something right! She and I love to collect a few cousins and head for the berry fields to pick them bush ripe. The beauty of blueberries is that they can be grown chemically free. Look for u-pick farms in mid-July to mid-August. Grab a few friends and definitely some children. Allow yourself the time freedom to enjoy the process and pick a good 30-40 pounds. You’ll get some great exercise, fresh air and be rewarded with a freezer-full of goodness all winter long!
The doctor ordered, “Eat a Colorful Plate!”
Recently, I interviewed my 83 year old friend, Evelyn Obermueller, who still cares for her home and has a showcase garden in Albuquerque, NM. Evelyn told me her son, the cardiologist, emphasized years ago, “Mom, you don’t have to get Alzheimer’s. Eat a colorful plate!” Visiting recently, he observed, “Mom, you really do eat healthy.”
Indulge in the complementary colors of Christmas–reds and greens–and you will be taking your dreams of a healthy body off your wish list and putting them on your grocery list.
Food really is your best medicine! What will you select from the produce aisle today?
